A few weeks ago I wrote about on-page and off-page SEO. Arguably, the most important off-page SEO tools you can leverage is your Google Business Profile.
If you own a gym, your gym Google Business Profile (GBP) is one of the most powerful tools you have to attract new members. When someone searches for “gym near me,” you want your gym to appear at the top of Google’s local search results. Your gym Google Business Profile is probably the single most important factor for local SEO.
Businesses with optimized profiles can see up to a 60% increase in overall website traffic.
Additionally, complete GBPs are 2.7 times more likely to be considered reputable by consumers.
By ensuring your gym’s GBP is fully populated with accurate information, high-quality photos, regular updates, and engaging content, you can improve your chances of appearing in local search results and attracting more potential members.

A well-optimized Gym Google Business Profile helps potential members:
- Find your gym easily on Google and Google Maps
- See your services, pricing, photos and vibes before they even visit your website
- Read positive reviews that establish trust and credibility
- Book a class or consultation directly from Google
How to Optimize Your Gym Google Business Profile
Here are the most important updates you should make to your GBP to ensure your gym ranks higher and stands out from competitors.
1. Complete Your Business Information
Google prioritizes listings with accurate and complete information. Missing details can hurt your ranking.
- Gym Name – Ensure your gym name is exactly the same across your website and social media.
- Address & Phone Number – This must match your website and other directories exactly.
- Website Link – Direct visitors to your membership page or free trial sign-up.
- Hours of Operation – Update immediately if your hours change (e.g., holiday schedules, new class times).
2. Add High-Quality Photos (and Update Them Often!)
Gyms with regularly updated photos rank higher and get more engagement.
What to Upload:
- High-quality images of your gym’s exterior (so people recognize it from the street)
- Workout areas, equipment, locker rooms, and amenities
- Coaches and trainers working with clients
- Group classes in action (CrossFit, HIIT, boot camps, etc.)
- Before-and-after transformations of real members
💡 Pro Tip: Add new photos every month and get members to post photos with their reviews (more on that below). Google favours active profiles!
3. Get More (and Better) Reviews
Reviews strongly influence rankings. A gym with 100+ positive reviews will almost always rank higher than one with only a handful.
- Ask happy members to leave a review – Set up an automated email or text after their first 30 days.
- Make it easy – Share a direct Google review link via email, SMS, or in your gym’s private Facebook group.
- Respond to every review – Thank positive reviewers, and professionally address any negative feedback.
💡 Pro Tip: If you use Kilo’s Gym Lead Machine, you can request and respond to reviews right from your account!
4. Use Google Posts to Share Updates
Posting regular updates signals to Google that your gym is active and engaged with its audience.
Post about:
- Special promotions (e.g., “Get your first month for just $1!”)
- New classes or schedule changes
- Member success stories
- Fitness tips or workout challenges
💡 Pro Tip: You can schedule Google Posts directly from your Gym Lead Machine dashboard!
5. Add Services and Pricing
You should also display what your gym offers. You don’t have to include the price, but you can if you want to. Under the Services or Products section, list:
- Membership Plans – E.g., “Unlimited Classes – $149/month”
- Personal Training Packages – E.g., “5 Sessions for $250”
- Special Programs – E.g., “6-Week Fat Loss Challenge”
6. Use the Q&A Feature (and Control the Narrative)
Google allows anyone to ask questions on your profile—and if you don’t answer, someone else might!
- Get a friend or staff member to post common questions (so you can answer them).
- Example: “Do you offer a free trial?” → Yes! We offer a 7-day free pass. Click the link to claim yours!
- Monitor the Q&A section regularly and respond quickly.
7. Keep Your Business Category and Attributes Up to Date
Under “Categories & Attributes,” choose options that best describe your gym.
Primary Category: Gym, Fitness Center, or Personal Trainer
Attributes to Select:
- Women’s-only gym (if applicable)
- 24/7 access (if you offer it)
- Personal training available
- Group classes available
How Google Ranks Gyms in Local Search
Google uses three key factors to determine which gyms show up first in local searches:
1. Distance
Gyms closer to the person searching have an advantage. But! Even if you’re farther away, you can still rank higher with better optimization.
2. Relevance
Google tries to match search intent. If someone searches “CrossFit gym near me,” and you don’t mention CrossFit on your profile, you won’t show up. Make sure your profile clearly lists what you offer.
3. Prominence
This is based on:
- How many reviews your gym has
- How active your Google Business Profile is (photos, posts, updates)
- Mentions on other sites (social media, Yelp, gym or local directories)
Fun, or not-so-fun fact: Google says,
“There’s no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google. We do our best to keep the search algorithm details confidential, to make the ranking system as fair as possible for everyone.”
Therefore, following best practices is your only way to rank higher.
A strong Gym Google Business Profile can help drive more gym memberships without spending extra on ads.
